| Equally old is the small town of Semionov, lying amidst forests and fields near the river Kerzhenets. Its wooden houses, built on a gently sloping hill, are noted for their finely carved window casings, ornate weather-vanes and chimneys. Old Believers founded here small, secluded monasteries in which were preserved treasures of ancient Russian art: icons, illuminated manuscripts, jewelry, precious fabrics and gold embroidery. |
