Sergiev Posad was the place where the first nesting doll was made. Traditionally matryoshkas are nested dolls. The first doll in the nest was a girl dressed in a sarafan and wearing a kerchief. She was called matryoshka from the Russian name Matryona. Each this doll has got an apron and a kerchief of not coinciding colours. Put in a row, the dolls are all many coloured and different. The big matryoshka is from 9 cm. (3.5 ") of height, the smallest one is about 1 cm. (0.39"). Ages 3-99 years.
